What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare is a global network that speeds up websites and protects them from attacks and downtime. It sits between a website's visitors and the servers where the site actually lives, acting as a fast, defensive layer that every request passes through. By operating data centers in cities around the world, Cloudflare can serve content from a location close to each visitor while filtering out malicious traffic before it ever reaches the origin server.

The mechanics combine several roles in one network. As a content delivery network, Cloudflare caches copies of a site's images, stylesheets, and other files across its global footprint, so those assets load from a nearby location rather than traveling across the world on every visit. As a security service, it inspects incoming traffic and blocks common threats, including distributed denial-of-service attacks that try to overwhelm a site with junk requests, along with bots and known malicious patterns.
