What is E-E-A-T?

E-E-A-T is Google's framework for judging the quality of content based on four qualities: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is not a direct ranking factor you can switch on, but a lens that describes the kinds of signals Google's systems try to reward. The idea is simple to state and demanding to satisfy: content should be created by people who know the subject, have relevant firsthand exposure to it, are recognized by others in the field, and can be trusted to be accurate and honest. Of the four, Trustworthiness sits at the center, because expertise or authority means little if the information cannot be relied upon.

Each element captures a different angle on credibility. Experience asks whether the creator has actually done or used the thing being written about, such as a reviewer who owned the product. Expertise concerns depth of knowledge and skill in the topic. Authoritativeness looks at reputation, whether the creator or site is known as a go-to source, often reflected in how others cite or reference them. Trustworthiness covers accuracy, transparency, honest presentation, and, on transactional pages, safe and legitimate handling of a visitor's money and data. In practice these show up through clear authorship, credentials, citations, reviews, secure and well-maintained pages, and a track record that others acknowledge.

The framework comes from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, the manual given to the human evaluators who assess sample results to help Google calibrate its systems. It began as E-A-T, covering Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. In December 2022 Google added the extra E for Experience, recognizing that firsthand exposure often signals genuine quality in a way that credentials alone do not. The raters do not set rankings directly; their judgments feed the ongoing tuning of the algorithms.

For a business, E-E-A-T matters because it shapes whether your content earns visibility, especially on topics where quality is scrutinized closely. Sites that publish thin, anonymous, or unreliable material struggle to compete against sources that demonstrate real knowledge and earn trust. Investing in named authors with genuine credentials, citing solid sources, keeping information current and accurate, and building a reputation that others reference all work toward the signals this framework describes. The payoff is content that both search systems and human readers are more willing to rely on.

A common mistake is treating E-E-A-T as a checklist or a score to game, adding author bios and credential badges without the substance behind them. The framework rewards demonstrated quality, not its costume. It matters most on topics that can affect a person's health, finances, or safety, the category Google calls Your Money or Your Life, where the bar for trust is highest. E-E-A-T also connects to the broader shift toward understanding meaning and entities rather than matching keywords, since Google increasingly tries to associate content with recognized, credible sources. The practical lesson is to build genuine authority over time: earn the reputation, document the expertise, share real experience, and be transparent, so that the signals of quality follow naturally from work that is actually trustworthy rather than merely dressed to look that way.

Why it matters

E-E-A-T guides how Google rewards trustworthy content, especially on sensitive topics. Demonstrating real experience and expertise protects and lifts your rankings.
